SPICE GIRLS TAKE ON GODZILLA AS BLOCKBUSTER® HEATS UP FOR SUMMER

Movie Rentals Heat Up 20 Percent Over Memorial Day Weekend

DALLAS, May 21, 1998 --As Godzilla devours local theaters this summer in a fit of multiplex madness, Blockbuster is stocking up on the hottest new releases in preparation for one of the hottest weekends for video rentals.

"Memorial Day is a boom for video rentals, and the beginning of our huge summer season," says Jim Notarnicola, Blockbuster executive vice president and chief marketing officer. "Movie rentals typically jump about 20 percent Memorial Day weekend and continue to be strong throughout the summer. So we have stocked up on the hottest new movies and video games for both kids and grown-ups."

Blockbuster has taken the hassle out of movie-hunting by guaranteeing the availability of hot new releases in many markets across the country. The guarantee is part of Blockbuster's promise that its members will "Go Home Happy" with the new release they want. If a customer finds the store out of stock of a guaranteed title, they receive a raincheck for a free rental of that title within the next 30 days.

Blockbuster's guaranteed new releases through Memorial Day weekend include:

… "As Good As It Gets"
    … "Tomorrow Never Dies"
    … "Kiss the Girls"
    … "Mousehunt"
    … "Flubber"
    … "Copland"

Hot Summer Hits

If you're not in the mood to brave the movie-going crowds, following is the starting line-up for Blockbuster's all-star summer on home video:

… The long-awaited release of "Spice World" starring the Spice Girls -- Baby, Ginger, Posh, Scary and Sporty - hits stores in mid-June.

… "Spice World" will make a great summer double-feature with the re-release of the all-time classic "Grease," also in late-June. Home video fans wanting more of John Travolta, may want to revisit the timeless "Saturday Night Fever" and "Urban Cowboy," or his latest hits "Face Off" and "Michael."
… This summer promises a "scream" with the release of "Scream 2," "Switchback," and "Home Alone 3."
… Kevin Costner gives us a glimpse of a future in need of heroes in "The Postman." Or for those more in the mood for subtitles, try the quite-different movie of the same name, "Il Postino (The Postman)" from 1995.
… Disney does that retro thing once again with the release of the live-action adaptation of "Mr. Magoo" in late-June.
… John Grisham's latest legal drama, "The Rainmaker," is directed by Francis Ford Coppola and stars Matt Damon. It hits stores in early June.
… Matt Damon is also featured in this year's surprise hit, "Good Will Hunting," which arrives in stores in July.

Other films to look forward to this summer at Blockbuster include:

"Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" "Phantoms"
"Fallen"  "Sphere"
"Wings of the Dove" "Zero Effect"
"Caught Up"  "US Marshalls"
"Amistad"  "Wag the Dog"
