And the fact that they are singing about Blockbuster's unprecedented program -- guaranteeing copies of select new releases to its members in many markets -- is music to everyone's ears. The spot, which is set in an empty and darkened Blockbuster store that has closed for the day, features video boxes springing to life from the store shelves, dancing and singing to the classic Motown hit "I'll Be There." Two 30-second versions of the spot will air, with one version featuring a current movie trailer in the middle. "As the nation's leading brand name in rentable home entertainment, Blockbuster's guaranteed new release program is unique to the industry," said Scott Parks, director of advertising for Blockbuster. "As a result, our goal was to create an entertaining ad that could speak to this bold, new promise." W.B. Doner of Detroit developed the ad for Blockbuster and Blue Sky Productions in New York created all the computer-generated special effects. "Blockbuster's new promise is cutting-edge in the industry and required the creative that would, in an entertaining way, motivate the consumer to act," said Alan Kalter, chairman of the board of W.B. Doner & Company. This is Doner's first creative work for Blockbuster after having been given an assignment from them in January 1998. "I'll Be There" follows in the footsteps of the Blockbuster "Dancing Baby" ads which aired nationally in March and were created by Young & Rubicam, touting Blockbuster's "rent five get one free" promotion, as well as the promise to offer more copies of new releases.
